St Edmundsbury Cathedral
Music at the Cathedral
The Facts
The Cathedral has several choirs who sing at services. The choristers, girls and boys, children and adults, come from many different walks of life to support the music and liturgy of the Cathedral.
The services are accompanied by the magnificent Harrison and Harrison organ, situated above the chancel. It contains over 3500 pipes. Re-built in 2010, the organ has been in different locations in the building, with its current location being part of the Stephen Dykes Bower 1960s work.
The two brightly coloured cases were also added in 2010 thanks to a generous donation.
As well as services, the Cathedral has an extensive concert and recital programme.
Did you know…?
- There are two spellings of choir with two meanings. Choir = a group of singers, Quire = the area of the cathedral where services take place
- The golden angel over the Cathedral entrance used to sit on top of the organ. It was lost and re-found in an antique shop in Belgium
